Energy NL CEO Charlene Johnson issued a statement Tuesday congratulating Prime Minister Mark Carney on his election as Prime Minister of Canada following the 2025 General Election.

“On behalf of Energy NL, I congratulate Prime Minister Mark Carney on being elected Prime Minister of Canada,” said Charlene Johnson, Energy NL CEO. “Canadians have chosen a prime minister with considerable economic experience to help guide our country through challenging times. We feel very strongly that a vibrant and supported energy industry, including offshore oil and gas, hydroelectricity, and wind to hydrogen and clean fuels, can move our country forward and help us navigate the uncertain times we face. Energy NL looks forward to working with Prime Minister Carney and his team to help ensure a prosperous Canada.”

Looking ahead, Energy NL is encouraged by the positive signals from Prime Minister Carney, the Liberal Party platform, and local candidates. During the campaign, Prime Minister Carney referenced further consultation with industry on the federal emissions cap and a desire to make Canada an energy superpower, including building more conventional energy. The Liberal Party platform also proposed a “one window” approval process.

“Energy NL has been extremely clear that we do not support the proposed federal emissions cap as it will be a cap on production, a cap on jobs, and a cap on opportunity for Newfoundland and Labrador and Canada,” Johnson continued. “As Canada looks to secure its energy supply, and as the world is anxious for cleaner and more reliable energy sources, Newfoundland and Labrador can supply that lower carbon oil as long as our production is not capped. Now is not the time for punitive measures. Now is the time to come together for informed dialogue and discussion to find solutions to provide clean energy to the world. I welcome the opportunity to do so with Prime Minister Carney and Canada’s new government.”
