Energy NL thanks federal parties for response on Canada's energy future

April 23, 2025

On March 25, 2025, Energy NL wrote the three major federal parties requesting their responses to questions of importance to the Newfoundland and Labrador energy industry and their approach to developing Newfoundland and Labrador鈥檚 energy sector. As the requested deadline for responses has passed, Energy NL is providing details on responses received from two of the parties.

鈥淓nergy NL thanks the New Democratic Party of Canada (NDP) and the Conservative Party of Canada (CPC) for sharing their responses to our initial letter penned March 25, 2025,鈥 commented Charlene Johnson, Energy NL CEO. 鈥淭he purpose of this letter was to receive clear answers to the most pressing questions Energy NL and its member companies have on the future of the province鈥檚 energy sector. The responses provided by the NDP and CPC, which can be found here, will help our membership understand where the parties stand on issues that matter to their work and families.鈥

In summary, the NDP has stated that:

  • Critical minerals, wind and hydrogen, electrification, and CCUS are key priority areas.
  • The party will pursue an East-West clean energy grid.
  • They intend to bring together all levels of government, businesses and unions to develop a national strategy aimed at boosting the mining and processing of Canada鈥檚 natural energy resources.

In summary, the CPC stated that:

  • Their plan will double oil production in Newfoundland and Labrador.
  • They will eliminate the 鈥渆nergy cap鈥 on Canadian growth.
  • They will immediately eliminate Bill C-69.
  • The CPC will introduce an expanded investment tax credit for Canadian industry for those who produce products with emissions below global averages.
  • They are proposing income replacement for Canadians who see interruptions in their employment due to trade issues.
  • They plan to develop a pre-permitting process for certain projects and set up a single Rapid Resources Project Office.
  • They will have one-year maximum wait times for approvals with targets of six months.

鈥淚 once again thank the NDP and CPC for sharing their responses to our letter,鈥 Johnson continued. 鈥淲e hope these responses will help inform Energy NL members. We continue to wait for a response from the Liberal Party.鈥
