Serica Energy, SeaTwirl partner to decarbonize offshore assets in North Sea with floating wind power

August 13, 2024

(WO) 鈥 Swedish floating wind turbine developer SeaTwirl has signed a Memorandum of Understanding with UK based offshore oil and gas operator Serica Energy. The goal of the partnership is to identify and assess potential opportunities to decarbonize Serica鈥檚 offshore assets and other associated electrification opportunities using renewable power and subsea energy storage.

Working together to collate data from Serica's operations will allow SeaTwirl to assess the commercial viability and suitability of SeaTwirl鈥檚 floating wing technology for offshore assets.

Serica Energy鈥檚 portfolio includes 11 producing fields in the North Sea, with a 2024 production guidance of 41,000 to 46,000 boed, according to the company鈥檚 website. Serica鈥檚 production comes from two main hubs: Bruce, where the company is operator, and the Triton FPSO, operated by partner Dana Petroleum.

Serica also operates the Columbus and Orlando fields and is a partner in the Erskine Field in the UK Central North Sea. The company鈥檚 assets already operate at a lower carbon intensity than the average UKCS producer.

Johan Sandberg, Chief Executive Officer SeaTwirl, said, 鈥淲e are truly excited to enter into this MoU with such a strong and innovative oil and gas operator as Serica Energy, who operates multiple assets in the North Sea and who has a solid reputation around innovation and decarbonization of their operations. We will explore a range of options with a clear ambition to develop an electrification solution that could be the first of its kind in the industry.鈥
